3 Easy Ways to Support HBCUs

3 Easy Ways to Support HBCUs

It’s that time of year again. School is in session and change is in the air. As students and teachers head back to school they have so many things to look forward to; reuniting with their community, furthering their education and let’s be honest, who isn’t excited about Homecoming? But anyone who has attended an HBCU knows that the experience, although rewarding, can also be incredibly challenging. So what can we do? Here are 3 easy ways you can support your HBCU this school year.

  1. Mentor a Prospective Student: The road to college is far from simple. Through applications, auditions, interviews and school visits, choosing the right place and earning a spot there can feel overwhelming. The truth is that nobody does it alone. If you know any high school students making big decisions about college this year, offer them some words of wisdom. Tell them about your experience, be honest about your wins and losses, and if you’re local, maybe even schedule an unofficial campus tour over a cup of coffee. Maybe your insight will offer them the clarity they need to feel confident in their choice.
  2. Search Scholarships & Donate: For many, college is a huge financial investment and even with financial aid, the cost of living and school supplies can be a real burden for young scholars. Luckily, there are plenty of scholarship opportunities to support ranging from essay contests to need based gifts. At Black & Scholared, we donate to HBCUs through the sale of our licensed collegiate apparel to provide scholarships and academic resources to students in an effort to promote, support and encourage higher education within the Black community.
  3. Rep your HBCU: Do you know that feeling when you see someone wearing a hoodie with your HBCU’s name on it? Or when you’re in a new city and someone stops you on the street because you decided to wear your Black & Scholared crew neck and they just have to know where you studied? The connection is instant and those moments are memorable. There’s nothing better than seeing your fellow HBCU grads winning. It strengthens the sense of pride and builds community in the simplest way. Right now Black & Scholared is licensed with three outstanding  HBCUs:  Hampton University, Morgan State University and our founder’s own alma mater, the illustrious Howard University. The impact of walking through the world while repping your HBCU with pride is invaluable.
